Attachment Methods & Substrate Guide

Selecting the right attachment method is one of the most critical decisions in canopy specification. This guide covers the four primary substrate types and the engineering considerations that affect system selection, member sizing, and anchor design.

Attachment Methods

Attachment by Substrate Type

SkyScape canopy systems can be attached to four primary substrate types. Each presents different load transfer requirements, anchor patterns, and connection details.

Concrete

Cast-in-place and precast concrete substrates allow for cast-in anchors or post-installed expansion and adhesive anchors. Anchor spacing and embedment depth are determined by wind and snow load calculations. SkyScape provides anchor layout drawings for contractor coordination.

Anchor type and embedment depth are project-specific — confirmed by engineering calculations per ACI 318.

Masonry

Brick, CMU, and stone substrates require through-bolt or anchor bolt connections into structural backing. Surface-mounted connections to unreinforced masonry are not recommended. SkyScape coordinates with the structural engineer of record on masonry attachment details.

Structural backing conditions must be confirmed before attachment details are finalized. Coordination with the structural EOR is required.

Structural Steel

Steel substrates including wide flange sections, HSS, and tube steel allow for welded or bolted connections. Connection type depends on access, field conditions, and load requirements. SkyScape provides connection details compatible with standard AISC specifications.

Field-welded connections require inspection coordination. Bolted connections are preferred where field welding is restricted.

Light Gauge Framing

Light gauge steel stud framing requires backing plates or blocking to distribute canopy loads across multiple studs. SkyScape reviews framing layouts and provides load distribution details to ensure the wall assembly can support the canopy system.

Stud gauge, spacing, and blocking configuration must be confirmed before attachment details are issued. Framing plans are required for engineering review.

What SkyScape Provides

Every SkyScape canopy includes engineering support from design through submittal. Our team reviews project conditions, calculates anchor forces, and produces complete submittal packages.

Submittal packages are produced for every project and include the documentation required by general contractors, architects, and local permitting authorities.

  • Wind and snow load calculations per ASCE 7
  • Anchor layout and embedment drawings
  • Connection details by substrate type
  • PE-stamped shop drawings where required
